August 28, 1955, was a very blessed day for Amos and Annie Morehead. Their third child was born at St. Elizabeth Hospital which they named Patsy. I was raised in Trinity Gardens on Weaver Road along with my three siblings, Pearline, Ronnie (deceased) and Anthony. We were a close-knit family that didn’t have a lot but didn’t know it. We were dedicated members of Gospel Hill Baptist Church for over forty years under the leadership of T. J. Calhoun, Robert Hobley, Francis Williams, and Floyd Young.
September 1960, at the age of five I entered Kindergarten at Rosa Lee Easter Elementary School where my passion for becoming a teacher was developed. I would line my dolls on the edge of the bed and use the back of my bedroom door as my blackboard and mocked Mrs. Wiseman and Mrs. Riser every day after school. My Junior High schooling was acquired at I. M. Terrell. I enjoyed being a part of the Cheerleading Squad for two years. My cousin, Vivian was a cheerleader at Carverdale High School and we would often get together and make up different cheers then teach them to each other squad. Kashmere High School, home of the mighty RAMS is where I acquired my High School education. I was involved in the Royalettes social club and was the Commandant of the Ramettes my senior year. Sponsored by Ms. Leanna Maiden Youngblood. I was elected by the student body as Miss Kashmere in 1973. We broke the tradition and had an African Coronation; I was crowned by Principal, Paul Campbell. My homeroom teacher Mr. H. E. Jones was instrumental in me entering Prairie View A & M University in the summer of 1973 at the age of seventeen. Three years later I acquired a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Education and Drivers Education. The teacher education curriculum was divided into four divisions; Drafting, Metal, Wood, and Crafts. August 1985 I acquired a Master of Arts Degree in Industrial Education with a Vocational Supervision Endorsement.
At the age of twenty, August 1976, I began my teaching career at Forest Book High School as a Drafting teacher under the leadership of Dennis Flim where I taught for two years. A Drafting position later became open at Kashmere High in 1978 and I was hired. I’ve been a devoted Computer Aided Drafting and Design teacher at my Alma Mater for the past thirty-nine years. The Principal’s that I have worked under are; Otho Gibson, Raymond Smith, Lloyd Choice, David Alexander, Sr, Willie Spencer, Jr., Stanton Lawrence, David Terrell, Dr. Charlotte Parker, Mable Caleb, Dianna Gibson Johnson, Paul Harden, Amber Williams, and Nancy Blackwell. I have had the pleasure of educating hundreds of open-minded students. Completing forty-one years in education I have sponsored many extra curriculum activities; Ramettes, Cheerleaders, Majorettes, Students Council, Technology Student Association, Robotics and the National Society of Black Engineers. The Homecoming Parades, Block Parties and the Back to School Bashes were a lot of hard work but one hundred percent enjoyable. I teach Dual Credit Drafting and Design Technology classes which enables CTE students to acquire a Drafting and Design Certification from Houston Community College (HCC) while attending Kashmere High School.
With continued education to keep up with day to day technology acquiring hours from Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Region 4 as well as HISD Professional Developments, I am a lifelong educator. My Affiliations are with Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church, under the leadership of Arthur Ray Young. I’m also a member of Epsilon Pi Tau and a lifetime member of the Kashmere High School Alumni Association.
