Ms. Myrtle Skillern (“Myrt”) is a native Houstonian and mother of two adult children, and grandmother of one grandson. Her son reminds her to laugh often; her daughter reminds her that the inner light of the soul shines bright even in darkness and her grandson reminds her of the goodness of God from generation to generation.
Myrtle is a 1969 graduate of Kashmere High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the squadron and 1969 cheerleading team under the leadership of Ms. Louis J. Bailey, speech and drama club and the Kings and Queens’s social club. She holds an undergraduate degree from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where she was a member of the Epsilon Mu chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; and a graduate degree from the University of Phoenix (Houston).
Ms. Skillern began her career in early childhood development and served as a teacher, director, and trainer for directors and staff working in the early childhood field throughout the Houston community. She is currently employed by Child Care Council of Greater Houston, Inc. as a contract specialist where her agency is contracted by the City of Houston to provide administrative oversight for local non- profit agencies to support individuals and families in its’ efforts to promote viable economically sustainable neighborhoods. Services to achieve this goal include programs targeted toward preventing homelessness and juvenile delinquency; while the child care programs provide child care assistance to support working families as well as those furthering their education or obtaining vocational or technical certification.
She is the recipient of both, the Lullelia Harrison Champion for Children’s Award as well as the Community Award sponsored by the League of Business & Professional Women. She loves humor and sharing the precious nuggets found in the Word as well as the trials and triumphs of life experiences with others. Reading and listening to great music has always been her passion but experiencing the pleasure of great food especially at family gatherings with friends brings her joy. She also has a special affinity for finding great bargains.
Ms. Skillern is a member of the Body of Christ, at New Hope Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Carlton O. Sylvester, Sr. She serves and has assumed leadership roles in various ministries as she grows in grace and the knowledge of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that pearl of great price. Most of all she’s overjoyed that she has been chosen in the Beloved is forgiven, and eternally grateful unto the LORD, our GOD!
