During Kathy’s wonderful high school years, she had the privilege to be chosen cheerleader, grades 9th thru 11th for Kashmere Junior/Senior High School (now Francis Scott Key Middle School) under the awe-inspiring and amazing leadership of her favorite sponsor, Ms. Louis J. Bailey. Her 12th grade year, the Junior/Senior High school transitioned to Kashmere Senior High School with the squad continuing under the leadership of Ms. Lena Maiden. Kathy was a three year tennis player and captain of the squad her senior year under Coach Ozell Harris.
Kathy served as Captain of the cheerleader squad her senior year (she also participated in the cheerleader squad for 7th & 8th grades). Kathy was a member of the String Orchestra, instrument, violin (Director, Conrad Johnson); member of National Honor Society and other school clubs/organizations.
Kathy’s athleticism spanned beyond high school. In college, (attended North Texas State University, now University of North Texas), she played tennis, but did not launch out to join the tennis team. In the eighties, as an employee of one of Houston’s largest CPA Firms for two years, she participated in the firm’s tennis club winning 1st & 2nd place tournament awards. Working for a high school in CCISD school district, she served two years as cheerleader squad co-sponsor.
With a young family, Kathy chose what was most important to her, focus on being a mom and an encourager to her husband as he served in Harris County Jail Chaplaincy ministry. As their sons began to leave the nest, she followed a career path in both corporate and non-profit as an Administrative Assistant and Executive Assistant to upper Executive management.
Kathy is a faithful helpmeet to her husband and favorite pastor, George E. Burrell, Sr.
She serves with her spiritual gifts as a member of Internal Hope Fellowship Church located in League City, TX and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Zeta Eta Chapter). Her most honored accomplishment outside of being a mother & wife is Founder/Executive Director of Earth’s Angels Conference (a phenomenal ministry reaching today’s teen girl and young adult woman). Kathy is recipient of The Esther and Cheryl Cumey Awards, recognition for excellence and distinction in ministry presented by Dr. Lois Evans (former Host and Founder of The First Lady Conference). The College of Biblical Studies Women’s Partnership has recognized Kathy as recipient of the Mary Martha Award. An accomplished classical pianist, Kathy takes joy in encouraging teen girls and both young/mature women on winning in life from a biblical perspective, an event planning specialist and enjoys sharing her faith in Jesus Christ.
Kathy is ever grateful for her parents, Cleotha (deceased) & Margie Phelps. Kathy and the love of her life, George E. Burrell, Sr. will soon celebrate 47 years of marriage. They are honored to have the opportunity to partner with God in the physical and spiritual growth of three sons: Toby, George Jr. (wife Nicole/their daughter-In-love) and Robert. Adding to the extension of their family: Granddaughter, T’Aliyah and Grandsons – George III, G. Brooks, D’Angelo, and Tobias. They also share in the lives of guardian daughters; Bareka, Bianca and Sabrina.
Kathy sees herself as being one of God’s cheerleaders; two of her favorite scriptures that inspire her through life’s journey: Colossians 3:16, 17 and Psalm 37:4; she adds salutation to her correspondence: God IS Faithful…
