Roy (“Fuzzy”) Cook was born in Beaumont, Texas, and migrated to Houston with his family in December of 1965. Starting in January 1966, he attended the original Kashmere Gardens Junior and Senior High. In the fall of 1968, he attended the new Kashmere High where served as Senior Class vice president before graduating in January 1970.
Roy signed up for football for the 66-67 season but was told he was too small for the positions he wanted to play. After a couple of practices, Roy’s tenacious play convinced the coaches he could play on the line and earned him the nickname of Fuzzy. Roy still considers it one of his greatest fortunes to have played and be a part of the 1969 Kashmere football team that was state-ranked and undefeated during the regular season.
After graduating from Kashmere, Roy enrolled at Texas Southern University (TSU). During his freshman year, Roy was an integral part of a group that successfully got a state law passed giving universities in Texas the right to close streets that bisected their campuses. A segment of Wheeler Avenue, which ran through the middle of TSU campus, was closed because of this law.
Following his sophomore year at TSU, Roy joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and spent the next two years traveling the world before returning to Houston and TSU to complete his bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Upon graduating in May of 1976, Roy started his professional career with Arthur Andersen & Company, then one of the largest international public accounting firms. Roy also pursued opportunities to fulfill his passion for entrepreneurial ventures by starting real estate, insurance, accounting/tax, payroll, and consulting businesses.
Some 40 years after graduation, Roy joined a group of former K-Ram athletes, who were committed to giving back to Kashmere and getting together at least once a year to fellowship, thus Kashmere Former Athletes Association (KFAA) was formed. Since its inception, Roy has served as the Treasurer and a Board Member of KFAA.
While at Arthur Andersen, Roy met Michelle Green, a graduate of Florida A&M University from Miami, FL. The pair married in 1978 and has been blessed with three children: Paula, Christopher, and Matheu, and three grandchildren: Paul, McKenna, and Leylah. Roy is now the MVP for his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends!
