Benny Gray Conway grew up in the Kashmere Gardens area and attended Dogan Elementary School and graduated from the 6th grade in 1962. He attended Kashmere Gardens Junior and Senior High School in 1962 where his track career began. In the 7th and 8th grades, Benny ran the sprints and relay teams coached by Lawton Smart. He suffered a toe injury and was not able to compete in the 9th grade. He continued to run track throughout high school under coaches Tom Hendricks and Kirby Jones. He won several medals as a member of the 4×100 and 4×440 relay teams. He also ran in the prestigious T.S.U. Relays. As a high school senior, his relay teams finished 3rd in the District Meet. It must be noted, Benny worked the midnight shift during his senior year while running track. Benny did not accept track scholarship offers from San Jacinto Junior College and Texas Southern University because of his family obligations. However, he began his Academic pursuits at T.S.U. after graduating from high school in 1968.
Benny married his high school sweetheart (Gwendolyn Bishop Conway) in 1971 and remains happily united to her to this day. To this union, one child was conceived (Keisha). Keisha is married to Collis Heath, and they have two children (Cole and Khai) our sweet grandchildren.
Benny was drafted into the Military (Army) in 1973 where he served in Germany as a Military Police Officer. In 1974 he was Honorably discharged. After his discharge from the military, he continued his academic pursuits and in May 1975 he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. In August 1976 he received a Master of Science Degree, from Texas Southern University.
Benny joined the Houston Police Department as a Cadet in 1976 in pursuit of a law enforcement career. In 1982 he was promoted to the rank of Detective where he investigated many high crime cases. In 1985 he obtained the rank of Sergeant where he was assigned to the Internal Affairs Division investigating police misconduct. In 1993 he was promoted to Lieutenant where he supervised officers in the Patrol Division, Internal Affairs Division and the Burglary and Theft Division. Benny retired honorably from the Houston Police Department in June 2017 after over 40 years of police service, after receiving many commendations and a Proclamation from Sylvester Turner (Mayor of the City of Houston).
Benny enjoys traveling, working on his farm, working out in his gym and fellowshipping with family and friends. Benny and his wife are Baptized Believers and faithfully attend the Fifth Ward Church of Christ where Brother Gary Smith is the Minister.
