Michael Porter a 1970 student-athlete graduate from Kashmere High, as a two year varsity football letterman. He also was an honor student and member of the National Honor Society. His experience in football started early at the original Kashmere where it went from 7th to 12th grade. Consequently, he was exposed too much older kids because there was only one football field. Michael also wanted to play because his brother, who was 3 years older than him, played. When he went out for the team he tried to play running back but found out early that wasn’t going to happen. He later moved to receiver but, the inability to catch, nixed that choice. Michael wound up playing the center position. He wanted to believe it was because he was smart enough to know all the plays but, unlike now, at that time, the centers were not known for their intellect. Although his playing weight never got above 170 pounds, he kept at it and even won some awards throughout his playing days at Kashmere. Later in life, he tried to explain to his two sons how important playing center was, but they would always tease him about having another player’s hands on his butt throughout the whole game. Michael learned so much by working with a group of individuals who came together to work as one team. Lessons learned on Kashmere’s playing field helped shape every aspect of his life. Mike’s team his senior season had an outstanding year as they placed themselves in Kashmere history with the only undefeated and untied team regular season 10-0, in Kashmere’s 66 year history as the finished the season 13-1 while winning the City Title, before losing to Beaumont Hebert in the state regional.
After graduating from Kashmere in 1970 Michael originally went to Central State University (HBCU) in Wilberforce, Ohio on a football scholarship, primarily because his older brother had played there and convinced the coach to give him a chance. He made the traveling squad because he could snap the ball on punts and P A T’s. After getting injured near the end of the season he transferred to Texas Southern University and pursued a degree in accounting, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1974. Michael began his professional career with the CPA firm Peat Marwick which later became KMPG. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1976. Michael was hired by one of his clients for the position of Controller at age 24. The company was later acquired by Center Saving Association where Michael began as Vice President, Special Projects. He later became Executive Vice President, CFO. After leaving Center Savings Association, Michael became part owner for an international investment company where is also served as CFO. The company had projects all over the world which allowed him to enjoy extensive travel which included such places as Europe, Ukraine, Russia, the Middle East and China.
