Frankie Brazos

 

Frankie Brazos graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School, Houston, Texas; received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education at Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and received a Master of Science Degree at Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas.  In 1955 he began his basketball coaching career in the Houston Independent School District at E.O. Smith Jr. High.  He began as the Assistant Coach and became Head Coach the following year.  After a number of years at E. O. Smith, Mr. Brazos coached at Lamar Fleming Jr. High and finished his career at Kashmere Sr. High School where he retired after almost 40 years of dedicated service.  His coaching legacy included 16 Junior High school city championships, 9 District Championships and the State Championship in 1980 at Kashmere Senior High with Alfred Godine and Luster Goodwin leading the way.  He also received to the city of Houston proclamations.  One time he took his E.O. Smith Junior High School team, split it in half and played in two tournaments on the same day — and won them both.  A record of 625-25 was he compiled in the junior-high ranks including an 82-game winning streak.

The former players under coach Brazos went on to win state high school titles at Wheatley and Kashmere, as well as go on to college and professional.  All throughout his career, coach Brazos not only taught hundreds of young men to play great basketball, but also to stay in school and excel in class.
