Sammy Johnson

Sammy Johnson nicknamed “The Jet,” participated in Kashmere sports from 1966 to 1970 and earned letters in football, baseball, and track and field sports. Sammy graduated from Kashmere Senior High School in 1970. In baseball, Sammy was an infielder on an outstanding team of players, and he ran a leg on the sprint relays in track and field. In football, he started at two positions; defensive safety and offensive flanker back.

 At that time, in 1969, Sammy played on the highest scoring offensive and the stingiest defensive squads seen in high school Texas football, finishing 12-1 for the year. The Kashmere Rams were ranked #2 in the state of Texas, while going undefeated at 10-0 in the city of Houston regular season football. In the tightly contested district race for the right to advance to the playoff level, and playing against the tough Sam Houston High School Tiger team, “The Jet,” defensively intercepted three passes in the game to help Kashmere seal the district championship and remained undefeated in an extremely powerful football district. There were two coaches Sammy credited with mostly impacting his level of greater football performances; Thomas Hendricks (who nick-named Sammy, “The Jet”) and Junius Simon. As a senior football player, Sammy received All-District honors and was a second team All-City defensive back.

After graduating from high school, Sammy attended Texas Southern University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, which academically he made the Dean’s list. He also earned a Master’s degree in Education, with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction, from the University of Phoenix. In addition, Sammy has earned graduate hours in Humanities from the University of Dallas. Sammy also spent several years traveling nationwide, studying at major universities with a group from the Free Enterprise Institute. Sammy is in the process of planning to earn a doctorate in education.

Sammy works with at-risk teens, teaching physical education and interpersonal studies’ skills, while coaching high school varsity basketball. One year, he was honored by the Heights Chamber of Commerce, Education Committee as ‘Teacher of the Year.’ Sammy is a member of the Fallbrook Church of Houston, Texas and loves to share the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone. His hobbies include reading great books, cooking delicious meals, physical workouts, interesting travels, and collecting electronic gadgets. “The Jet” is a member of the Kashmere Former Athletes Association.

For 41 years, Sammy’s been married to Mindora Johnson. They have two outstanding children, his son, Samuel and his daughter Kaeyla. There is one wonderful grandson, Javier. His parents were the late Wayne Johnson and presently his mother, Flossie Johnson who is 107 years old. Sammy’s siblings are Bobby Hubbard, Victor Johnson, and Sharon Johnson.
