Sonya Boutte

Sonya Boutte was born on January 27, 1972, in Houston Texas.  She is the daughter of Mary F Bass-McGee and Charles Boutte Sr.  Sonya was a multi-talented three-sport student-athlete graduating from Kashmere Sr. High in 1990. At a very young age Sonya began to gravitate towards basketball.  When she relocated to the small town of Lovelady, TX, one of her eldest cousins Phil Watson began to bring out her talent in the yard shooting hoops in a bicycle rim nailed to a tree.  There under the guidance of her mother and great-grandmother Jennie Mae Watson, she began to play basketball with her first organized team, The Little Dribblers coached by Mr. Avalon.

In 1987 Sonya relocated back to Houston where she lived under the guidance of her godmother Nelda Jean Watson.  She attended Barbara Jordan, and a year later decided to transfer to Kashmere Sr. High, due to the hard task of commuting between two schools.  Sonya not only continues her love for basketball but develops her skills and talent for volleyball and track as well. She was the team captain for volleyball, basketball, track and field. The push and tuff love from her coaches; Oscar O’Gilvie, Ozell Harris, Thomas Lester, and Troy Howard gave her the needed confidence to succeed. Her basketball team was district champs; she made All-District in basketball and track as she ran on all relay teams. She placed in regional throwing the discus. She was voted “Most Athletic Female” by her senior class peers and graduated in the top 10% of the class.

After graduation, Sonya attended Jarvis Christian College on a basketball scholarship, and afterward attended Education of America where she received her certification as a Certified Medical Assistant.  Sonya worked and managed clinics for 20-plus years, and recently retired to own and operate Guidry’s Fast Food by Sonya which was founded by her grandfather Mark Guidry nearly 30 years ago in the heart of third-ward. Sonya has one son Jalin Boutte and two grandsons; Jaiden and Kaiden Boutte.
