Vernon Edwards – 1990 Kashmere Senior High School graduate where he played Football – Defensive Line (All 19-5A and Team Captain) under the leadership of Coach Kirby Jones, Basketball – Forward (All-Greater Houston, All 19-5A and Team Captain) under the leadership of Coach Frankie Brazos and Track/Field – Discus, Shot Put and High Jump under the leadership of Coach Thomas Lester (All 19-5A). During those years Vernon’s nicknames were “Little Larry,” “Darth Vader” and of course “Boo.” He graduated from Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX) in 1995 where Vernon was named All-SWC Defensive Lineman in 1993 and Team Captain. Vernon graduated with a Major in Sociology and a Minor in Economics. After college, he played in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers.
After his stint with the San Diego Chargers he was hired by Southwestern Bell (AT&T) where he has remained within the Information Technology Organization. He is a member of the Mustang Club (SMU), Project Management Institute (PMI) and several community organizations that mentor the youth.
Vernon is the son of Larry (‘68) and Daphne Edwards (‘70) who are both alumni of Kashmere Senior High School. He is married to E. Michelle Edwards they have one daughter Erin Edwards. Through the support of his parents, wife, and sister (Vemeccia Edwards-Harris) none of the above would’ve been possible. Vernon would like to thank the coaches that have impacted his life the most Jones, Abrams, Dunham, Lester, Brazos, Gant, Gregg (SMU), Adams (SMU) and Lynsey (Chargers). He would also like to thank his mentors from 5th Ward Church of Christ who always reminds him that God was watching John Tillman Jr., Gary Smith, and Craig Randall. Many thanks to his athletic peers Clayton Jackson, Tijuana Ervin, Kenneth Lathan, Morris Washington III, Reginald Slater, Antonio Armstrong, Jonathan Mumphrey (SMU), Byron Bonds (SMU), Chad Patton (SMU), Adam Voyles (SMU) and Chedrick Crosley for the many battles that defined him as a person.
