Richard D. Mitchell, Jr, as a student-athlete leader in the Kashmere High School Class of 1970, was voted Vice–President, Most Popular, and Most Handsome while being a two-year member of the golf team.  Participation on the golf team helped to develop teamwork skills and focus on accomplishing goals. Richard’s interest in golf began at an early age, when his next-door neighbors Elijah and Joshua Slexman introduced him to caddying at Pecan Gardens Golf Course. Richard’s junior year at Kashmere he decided to follow in the footsteps of the “Slexman Twins” and join the Kashmere golf team. Through golf, Richard was able to develop a close relationship with Golf Coach Weldon Drew. The class officer position as Vice President established a foundation of effective communication skills in building positive relationships between fellow students, teachers and administrators.  His years at Kashmere High are still highly regarded as one of his most memorable life experiences. The encouragement to expand his education came from the principal George Haynes, teachers, counselors, coaches, and support staff. All were dedicated to developing each student’s character and potential to achieve successful outcomes in their lives. Richard D Mitchell, Jr. continued his education at Prairie View A & M University graduating in three years with a BA degree in business administration.  His college education opened many opportunities. As the Kashmere High teachers and councilors advised, “The world is bigger than this campus”. They were correct.

He was employed as an Inventory Specialist and an Internal Auditor for General Mills, Inc., with relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota. The responsibilities included national travel in the United States and Canada to the various facilities. Richard D. Mitchell, Jr returned to Houston and was employed at M.W. Kellogg Oil Construction prior to being employed as the Warehouse Manager at Houston Furniture Bank, a nonprofit organization that provides essential furniture to families in need. He was greatly appreciated for his training of warehouse personnel and sensitivity in the care of the families. Effective as 2021, Richard retired. He always enjoyed cooking, and being sensitive to others in need, and he often shares meals with community friends.
