Michael Smith

Michael Smith outstanding student-athlete attended Kashmere Senior High School from 1972 to 1974 graduating in the top ten percent of his class proudly. While at Kashmere Michael excelled in sports especially baseball where he played centerfield under the tutelage of Coach Major Abrams. He was a three year varsity letterman and starter. Michael would blossom into an outstanding player, leader and co-captain of the team as a senior. His junior year he was named All City honorable mention and as a senior he was recognized as All District and All City player in the Greater Houston Area, an honor indeed.

Michael had a few college offers and decided to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on a full athletic scholarship. Doing his era Southern University Baseball Organization was the premier powerhouse of HBCU schools. Mike would precede a list of former Rams baseball players to Southern University, Joe Pittman, Larry Washington, Michael Kent Henderson and Larry Johnson paved his way. He was so proud of his younger brothers that preceded him at Kashmere, Vincent (baseball}, Anthony and Gary {football}. After Michael’s baseball career he went to work for the United States Postal Service for 38 years retiring in February. Of 2016. Michael is all about family as he and his wife Mary enjoy spending time with their 6 kids 10 grandkids and 1 great-grand. He dedicates his Ring of Honor to his parents Bencil and O’Dell Smith.
