Dr. Rev. Willie Jones is a native Houstonian whose life was molded by the strong Christian teaching of his loving parents T.H. and Ophelia Jones. He was the third son of six boys, which allowed his life to be constantly filled with competition and scuffles that fueled him to be an awesome competitor on courts or mounds of the sports that he loved playing. His childhood was filled with the excitement of playing baseball, basketball, and football on the vacant lots in Fifth Ward, with boys that became lifelong friends. Willie and his childhood friends would share many athletic milestones together, but none more gratified than being crowned the 1965 Baseball State Champs, a team that featured eight neighborhood friends and members of “The Ryon Sports Baseball Organization” under the leadership of Mr. Herman “Coach Boola” Smith. The Kashmere Gardens Rams defeated Moore High School of Waco, Texas two out of three games to claim the championship on the pitching of Larry Washington and the outstanding hitting of Willie Jones. Willie supplied the hot bat as he had three hits and batted in both runs to defeat Moore High in the third and deciding game to earn the title for Coach Henry Stevenson.
As a graduate of Kashmere Gardens Senior High in 1966, he was privileged to play college baseball, but the “call” on his life was slowly propelling him toward the ministry.
In 1975 he married the joy of his life Mary Griffin. He is the proud father of five children, Valerie, Kendall, Derrick, Damon and Wilandria and God has privileged him to have five beautiful grandchildren.
In 1980, God changed his occupation to Pastor of New Mount Calvary Baptist where he served for 32 years before he retired. The legacy that he left during his tenure at Calvary is too long to share, but the Holy Spirit breathed on that small congregation and from the sound teaching of the pulpit and the loved shared by the congregation; it grew to nearly 2000 members and over 42 ministries. God be praised for what he can do with a little boy from Fifth Ward. Willie was also empowered to establish a partial hospital on the church’s campus that cared for the needs of seniors with special needs. He partnered with Northwest Preparatory to house on campus a charter school, where over 100 students attended daily. He established a Food Bank that to this day feed over 500 families a month. He partnered with Volunteers of America for over ten years where a facility of over 32 houses was used to assist women transitioning for being incarcerated. Willie received his B.S. degree from the College of Biblical Studies, his M.A. degree from Faith Seminary and he was bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Saint Thomas Christian College.
