Sonya Mims Hopkins is being honored for her outstanding achievements as a multi-sport athlete. She was born and raised in Houston’s Trinity Garden neighborhood, raised by a strong and devoted single mother Zeola Mims Andrews she is the middle of two siblings Kimberly Mims and Jaclyn Mims. Married Husband Michael Hopkins we have 5 children Sidney, Simone, Troi, Chris, and Sean. Sonya grew up in a family that valued faith, perseverance, and hard work. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep sense of responsibility, resilience, and compassion—qualities that have guided her throughout her life and career. Sonya attended J.C. McDade Elementary, Francis Scott Key Middle School & Kashmere Sr. High School.
Sonya’s passion for leadership was first shaped during her middle school years where she excelled in Basketball, Volleyball, and Track. During her high school years, Sonya proceeded to excel, competing in Basketball (O’Gilvie/Dunham), Volleyball (Coach Harris), Track (Coach Lester/Reynolds), Golf (Coach Robinson), and Tennis (Coach Harris). Her versatility, discipline, and determination set her apart as a leader earning her recognition for both athletic performance and sportsmanship. She earned multiple district titles and competed on reginal levels. She was recognized as a top scorer in Basketball, exceptional server in Volleyball, ran first leg in the 4×1, 4×2 and 4×4 relays in track and placement in the long jump and triple jump. Sonya also obtained titles in both Golf and Tennis. She was voted Most Athletic Female her senior year class of 1994. The lessons she learned through athletics delivered teamwork, perseverance, and mental toughness that became the foundation for her future success.
Following high school, Sonya built a successful career in over 20 years in the insurance industry, serving in multiple capacities as an Independent Insurance Adjuster, Property and Casualty Agent, and Underwriter. Through each role, she demonstrated exceptional professionalism, integrity, and a passion for helping others safeguard their futures.
Sonya credits her mentors and coaches for shaping her character and guiding her journey, and she honors them by investing her time and energy into developing the next generation. Her life stands as a testament to the enduring impact of athletics, faith, and mentorship in building strong, purpose-driven leaders.
