Michael D. Felder, growing up in Houston’s Historical Fifth Ward equipped Michael with the spiritual, mental, and physical attributes needed to navigate life’s journey.
With a community sprouting numerous prolific personas such as, Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland, George Foreman, Billy Preston, etc. as well as diverse ethnic groups and social activists, his character was enriched tremendously.
Mike started participating in sports at Atherton Elementary and the Hester House, before moving on to Ryan Jr. High under the icons William S. Holland and Coach Johnny B. Felder Jr. As his athletic abilities grew (being unanimously named All-City Selection as a running back and Captain of an undefeated Ryan Junior High team for three years), so did his social awareness being in the company of the 1st Black City Councilman Judson Robinson and 1st Black HISD Board Member Hattie White.
He then moved on to play as an all-purpose back for the gifted Billie Matthews & the Mighty Kashmere Rams in 1969, where they were State semi-finalists. In 1970, Coach Johnny B. took over as head coach and lead Mike and the Rams to two City Championships before Mike graduated in the top 10% of his 1972 class. At Kashmere, he led the city in rushing, touchdowns, and punt and kick returns – which lead to his selection as Offensive All-City Back among the region’s best athletes.
He attended Texas Southern University, receiving a BA in Political Science, with a minor in History in 2005. He retired after 30 years from the U.S. Postal Service and 20 years as a Pastor with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He gives all praise, honor and glory to GOD for his wife, 6 children, and numerous blessings and grace bestowed upon his life.
