Michael Stanton, (Postpartum) 1974 Kashmere graduated developed a love for basketball early in childhood playing at Rosewood Park. The games on the sandlot court helped improve his basketball skills. Arriving at Kashmere after a steady junior high career at I. M. Terrell, he played on the junior varsity team as a sophomore. The following season Stanton made the varsity team and most times was Coach Drew first sub. That season groomed Michael for an outstanding senior season, after playing in the shadows of seniors Phillip Davis and Danny Thomas.
The wisdom and knowledge of Coach Weldon Drew was that he needed a pass first guard who sought to put his teammates in the best position to score and to also be an extension of him on the court. He needed a player that could make other players better and not have that me mentality a part of his game. In steps Michael Stanton to that role for the 1974 team. Michael and Craig Reggins were named co–captains by Coach Drew and the pieces were set for better things to come. To begin the 74 season Kashmere would win their first 5 games before losing to a red hot shooting Sterling High. They would win the next 6 games before losing to Clear Lake. After that loss, it was time for a team gut check, which cultivated in a 33 game winning streak and Kashmere’s first state title since 1961.
After graduating Stanton accepted a basketball scholarship to College of Midland where he played one season before transferring to Texas College, where he closed out his career. Michael was employed by Metro Transit System and retired due to medical conditions. He is from a loving and supported family that misses him dearly.
