Stephen Mitchell, a proud 1972 graduate of the legendary Kashmere High School in Houston’s Greater Trinity Gardens, has lived a life marked by God, grit, grace, and unwavering commitment to family. Born into a family rich with culture and resilience, Stephen graduated in 1975, carrying forward the pride of Kashmere Rams and the values instilled by his Coaches, Weldon Drew, and Ned Streety, as well as his Jr High Coach Frankie Brazos. One of Stephen’s most prideful accomplishments was playing on the 1974-1975 State Championship Basketball Team. Stephen received a scholarship to attend Alvin Junior College, where he served as Co-Captain on the Basketball Team.
Stephen answered the call to serve his country with honor, first in the United States Army for three years, then continuing his dedication in the Navy for two more. His military tenure shaped his character, instilling a deep sense of duty, precision, and perseverance. Following his service, Stephen built a remarkable 26-year career as a machinist at ROC Carbon, where his craftsmanship and work ethic earned him the respect of peers and leadership alike. He retired as a safety manager, a role that reflected his natural instinct to protect and uplift those around him. Beyond his professional and familial achievements, Stephen has spent over four decades immersed in the world of horse racing and trail riding. A skilled racehorse trainer, he is known for his intuitive connection with animals and his deep respect for Western tradition. His love for the trail is more than a pastime, it is a spiritual journey, and a way to stay grounded and connected to nature and heritage. Stephen has been a devoted member of St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church for the past 15 years.
Stephen is most grateful to his mother who raised him and his siblings, as a single parent. Stephen is a devoted husband, and father of five children, three daughters and two sons, and a proud grandfather of seven. His love for his family is the heartbeat of his life, guiding his every decision and fueling his passions. Whether cheering from the sidelines or offering quiet wisdom, Stephen’s presence is a steady source of strength and joy for his family. Stephen’s commitment to the inner-city community has never wavered. He is a familiar face at local events, a mentor to adults seeking direction, and a quiet force behind initiatives that uplift and empower. His legacy is not just in what he has done, but in the lives, he has touched, through service, storytelling, and steadfast love.
From the halls of Kashmere High to the stables of the racetrack, Stephen Mitchell’s journey is a testament to resilience, purpose, and the enduring power of community roots.
