Akeshia Hunter

Akecia Hunter is a proud multi-talented 1996 student-athlete and graduate of Kashmere Sr. High School. She is the youngest of four children and daughter to James & Rosie Hunter Jr. Akecia was born and raised in Houstonโ€™s Kashmere Gardens neighborhood, where she attended and played sports at J.C. Mc Dade Elementary, Francis Scott Key Middle School & Kashmere Sr. High School. She attended church with her family and was a member of the Northside Antioch Baptist Church, where she started singing in the youth choir and served on the usher board. In addition, Akecia was one of the original members of the Full Circle Outreach Ministries for youth, founded by her dear Aunt Linda & Uncle Rufus Wheat; where they mentored her and other inner-city youth with the essentials to become positive members of their communities.

Akeciaโ€™s athletic and singing ability is a part of a rich family legacy. Akeciaโ€™s father, Mr. James A. Hunter Jr., was inducted into the Intercollegiate League Hall of Fame for Texas School Boy for his success in Track & Field at Fidelity Manor High School, running an impressive 9.2. in the 100-yard dash in 1968 and her big brother James A. Hunter III was an awesome basketball player and mentor who taught her how to play the game of basketball on their backyard basketball court. In addition, her mother the late Mrs. Rosie M. Hunter was a songstress that won 1st place vocalist in the Prairie View A&M Interscholastic League competition in 1966. In her senior year, Akeciaโ€™s mother was voted โ€œMost Talentedโ€ female at Fidelity Manor High School and her sister Ambroshia Hunter-Perry was also voted โ€œMost Talentedโ€ female at Kashmere Sr. High in 1989 for her phenomenal vocal abilities.

Akecia loved to compete, and she lettered in four sports at Kashmere that included: Basketball, Golf, Volleyball and Track & Field; under the guidance and direction of Coach(s) Oscar Oโ€™Gilvie, Ozell Harris, Gary Dunham, Thomas Lester, Alonzo Reynolds and Ms. Robinson. She was a high point scorer in Basketball, powerful server and hitter in Volleyball and her achievements in Golf and Track & Field were remarkable, winning multiple district titles in both sports and competing at the regional level. She was the #1 golfer on her team and ran on the 4×1, 4×2, and 4×4, relay track teams and competed individually in the 100-meter & 200-meter races along with winning her field events in the long jump and triple jump. As a natural leader, she served as captain on all four teams during her senior year and was voted the โ€œMost Athleticโ€ female in both her junior and senior years for the Class of 1996.

Akecia is forever grateful to Kashmere Sr. High and her coaches for teaching her invaluable lessons about teamwork, pride, respect, accountability and academic excellence. Their guidance and support were instrumental in shaping her both on and off of the field, and she is truly appreciative of the strong foundation they provided. Akeciaโ€™s talents and popularity extended beyond athletics, as she was also named a โ€œCampus Cutieโ€, a 12th grade attendant in the KHS Royal Court, and she was a dedicated member of the KHS Concert Choir singing 1st soprano under the direction of Mrs. Carroll & Mrs. Hubert. Academically, she excelled, graduating with honors in the top 10% of her class and she was a recipient of the Shining Stars Academic Scholarship.

After high school, Akecia pursued her higher education at Texas Southern University before transferring to the University of Phoenix, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Management and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), graduating with honors in both programs.

Akeciaโ€™s passion for excellence continued in her professional career, where she has built a successful 15-year career in the Oil & Gas industry. She became a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in API and ISO 9001 Internal Auditing, Quality Assurance and Quality Management Systems (QMS); while furthering her career by working in Supply Chain and Warehouse Management, and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) where she holds over 40 certifications. Currently, Akecia is employed at TechnipFMC where she has over 10 years of service. In addition, she is a certified job coach that specializes in providing transitional vocational rehabilitation training for students and young adults with disabilities from ages 16-24.

In her spare time, Akecia enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, shopping, dining out, bowling, playing spades & dominos and any other competitive games. She loves listening and dancing to music, hosting events, completing home improvement projects, encouraging others, giving financial and credit advice and exploring the great outdoors.

Akecia would like to thank her entire village of family, friends and mentors who have all supported and played vital roles in her life. She is very humbled and appreciative to the committee to be recognized and inducted into the prestigious Kashmere Former Athletes Association (KFAA) 2025 โ€œRing of Honorโ€ for her outstanding achievements in Basketball, Golf, Volleyball, and Track & Field.
