Leon “Leaky” Sandles is an inspiring individual with a legacy in both athletics and community service. His achievements as a 1961 student-athlete of Kashmere Gardens Jr Sr High School particularly in basketball and baseball set the stage for a life dedicated to leadership and positive change. Notably, his role in the historic Co-State Champs with Madison High School of Dallas Texas in 1960 marked a significant moment in Texas sports history. The game was canceled due to an overcrowded arena, as many fans came to witness the battle of Texas top two teams. Leon was a three year letterman excelling in baseball under the tutorship of Coach Henry Stevenson. Coach Steve, who possessed a kin eye for recognizing talent, considers Leon one of the best fly ball catcher he coached and a sure out if you hit the ball anywhere near centerfielder. His teammate Larry Johnson, Quote: when the ball was hit to Leon “AKA Leaky”, I would head for the dugout because you could bank on the catch being made. Leon’s junior season would be Kashmere’s best team as they would represent Houston in the PVIL playoffs after winning the City Championship. They eventually lost to Galveston Central after winning the first game and losing the next two games ending their season.
After high school Leon continued his athletic journey to Texas Southern University where he was a member of the baseball team. His service to the U S Army further highlighted his commitment to excellence where he not only served but also was honored as the “Most Outstanding Player” in baseball while stationed overseas. Leon passion for the development of young black boys into manhood is central to his mission in life. For over 25 years, he served as President of the Boys Rite of Passage at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. His dedication to mentoring our youth is clear through the recognition he has received, including the “Outstanding Texan Award” from the Texas Black Caucus Legislative and the Late Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee “Mentorship Award”.
Leon is a devoted husband to Charolette Sandles for 60 years and father to his two daughters Cindy Byrd and Andrea Sandles. He is the proud grandfather to Ryan Byrd, Leon’s family stands as a testament to his character and commitment. His enduring faith and service to his church highlight the deep spiritual foundation that guides him in all his endeavors.
