Sherwin E. Jessie Jr.

Sherwin E. Jessie Jr. a 2003 graduate of Kashmere High was born in Houston, TX and attended Kashmere Gardens Elementary as he was raised right in the heart of Kashmere Gardens. From a deep church background Sherwin was brought up attending church at First Morning Star Baptist Church where Carl E. Isaac Sr. is the pastor and Greater Union Missionary Baptist Church under leadership of Pastor G. T. Curry Jr.

His late mother Charmane Young made a career move which caused him to then attend Cunningham Middle School in the Galena Park District, a feeder school to North Shore High School. Here is where it gets great! The entire time he attended middle school on the east side of Houston he attended many Kashmere High School athletic events because he had a tremendous amount of family who attended Kashmere High that participated in many different sports. He simply fell in love with the entire culture and spirit that Kashmere displayed over a 3-year period. When he played his last sport and game in middle school many coaches just knew he would attend North Shore, but Mr. Jessie had other plans and that was to attend the great Kashmere High School. At Kashmere Sherwin played football, participated in track & field, played soccer and was named โ€œMr. Kashmere for the 2002-2003 school year by his peers. Under the leadership of coach Kirby Jones, Garry Dunham and Johnny Gant and many other great men. Sherwin always states he owes a tremendous amount of appreciation to his teachers and fellow classmates who have inspired and encouraged him along the way.

Sherwin played varsity as a sophomore where he gained over 1000 yards rushing for the year 2001, and over 1300 yards in the year 2002. As he got to his senior year he shared the backfield with guys like his brother Issac McZeal, Jason Berryman, and Nathan Guillory and he still was able to rush for almost 1000 yards. Over the course of 3 years of playing varsity he earned many First Team All-District selections. He stated throughout the years playing running back for the Mighty Rams he was only able to achieve those accolades due to having some great offensive lineman that made running the ball easy work!

While competing in track and field he made many appearances at the regional level under the leadership of Thomas Lester and Robert Mitchell. In track he competed in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4×100 meter relay, 4×200 meter relay and occasionally the 4×400 meter relay.

After high school Sherwin attended Grambling State University, where he played football under the great Doug Williams and Melvin Spears. He was recruited by many colleges around the United States but his choice to attend Grambling State was easy once one coach at Prairie View deemed him too small to play running back. He went on to become a National Champion in 2005 as his Grambling State team dominated the S.W.A.C. that year earning one of the nicest championship rings known at Grambling State.

He would like to give special thanks to his wife of 7 years Alysia Jessie and his son Sherwin Jessie III for their continued support and unconditional love. He also wishes to acknowledge his mother Charmane Young, Uncle Garry Dunham, Aunt Cynthia Waddell, and of course his grandmother Birdie Pickett, for their tremendous amount of support throughout his life. Men like Andre Walker, Rodney Hampton, Jarrett Scales, Robert Harmon and Michael Anderson also played a huge role in ways they may never know. Sherwin also states he would like to give special thanks to his teachers and fellow classmates from 1999 to 2003 at Kashmere who were also a huge blessing as they were a big part of who he is today. Sherwin would like to mention to his fellow classmates of 2003 thank you all and this 2026 Ring of Honor induction is for you!
