He became interested in coaching Basketball in 1983; his school campus assignment at that time was IM Terrell Jr. High School. While still teaching his Technology Education assignment, coaching would be an extracurricular assignment. It was a wonderful opportunity to join a coaching staff with Gladys Williams, Loria Banks, Peyton Womack, Joel North and Henry Garner. While coaching basketball for three seasons 1983, 84, 85, Coach Love was given the opportunity to lead youth boys in a team sports and to challenge them physically and mentally as they shared and assumed responsibilities along with maintaining academic standards and requirements. The IM Terrell Boys Basketball team won two Zone 2 Championship 1985 and 1986. The 1986 Team participated in the Stars of The Future city-wide tournament placing 3rd. In the 1986-87 school year he was reassigned to Dick Dowling Middle School, teaching Technology Education. Dowling coaching program asked him if he would assist with their Basketball program. With his assistance Dick Dowling Boys Basketball was the 1987 Zone 5 Champs. They participated in the Stars of the Future city-wide tournament, placing 2nd.
In 1987 he became Boys Track and Field Coach, which was a new challenge for him. Robert, who never personally participated in Track and Field, used basically the same principles he used for basketball. The team represented Dick Dowling Middle School well. They were always in the top ranking in all meets entries. The 7th grade team set the 1987 city 400-meter relay record. The Dick Dowling Track Team was the 1987 Zone 5 Champs.
