Roderick Boyd grew up in the Houston 5th-ward/ Kashmere Garden area. He is the oldest of seven kids, all raised by his mother, Patricia Boyd. He is married to Akilah Boyd, wife of whom he credits to being his backbone and one of God’s true blessings in all that he has accomplished. He also has one son, Roderick Jr., and two daughters, Chelsey and Kassidy Boyd. From a young age, he watched his mother work constantly to try and provide for her kids. With that in mind, he knew he had to become the man of the house sooner than later. Roderick always strived to be the best in all that he did. He attended Fleming Middle School in which he played multiple sports. Although he favored basketball, he quickly stood out in track. After his team won the district championship and broke two relay records, Roderick was approached by Kashmere Coach Lester who led him to eagerly wanting to play high school sports as a RAM. Roderick attended Barbara Jordan High School for Careers but chose to play sports at Kashmere High School. He played basketball and ran on the varsity track team starting his freshman year.
In 1994, Roderick graduated from high school in the top 2% of his class. He received the Jesse H. Jones Academic Scholarship, Prairie View A&M University Honors Scholarship, and a two-year incentive-based scholarship to run track. In 2002, he graduated from University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. He later went on to receive his Master’s degree in Education emphasizing Educational Leadership from Lamar University. Roderick earned his teacher certification and became a certified Mathematics teacher. While teaching at Forest Brook Middle School, Roderick was voted 2008 Rookie Teacher of the Year and Academic Teacher of the Year again in 2011. In 2016, he received a call from his high school mentors, Coach Dunham and Coach Lester. They wanted to leave the Track & Field program in the hands of someone they could trust and who they felt would have the best interest of the kids as they were planning retirement.
In 2016, Coach Roderick Boyd was back home at Kashmere High teaching Algebra and coaching multiple sports. In 2018, Coach Boyd became the number one STAAR testing Algebra teacher in the state of Texas with a 91% passing rate. He went on to become teacher of the Year in 2018 and was honored at the HISD gala for the STAAR testing accomplishment.
In 2019, Roderick Boyd incorporated Hit Scholars, a non-profit organization that he previously started, that provides alternative methods of educating and challenging students academically and actively while doing something they enjoyed doing. This club became one of Kashmere High’s most decorated organizations that continues to empower students to this present day. Roderick is a true trailblazer when it comes to investing in the youth. He truly understands that it definitely takes a village to raise a child.
